2017 FSR Summer Internships

Want to spend your semester in Washington? Are you interested in the intersection between the economy and politics? If so, the Financial Services Roundtable (FSR) is the right place for your next internship!

FSR is a fast-paced, leading advocacy organization for America’s financial services industry. We work directly with CEOs, executives, and other key figures in the financial world to ensure policymakers enact legislation and regulation that is good for consumers, businesses, and the American economy.

We seek talented interns who crave learning new skills and aren’t afraid to tackle big projects. As an intern you will get to work with a variety of our staff, working on real projects impacting America’s financial services industry.

FSR prides itself on providing an engaging internship experience that exposes you to Capitol Hill, government agencies including Treasury, law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the White House, and other key leaders in the financial services industry.

The position is based in Washington, D.C., and candidates are paid an hourly minimum wage. While we ideally prefer interns to work a full 40 hours each week (Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm), the hours and the length of the internship can be somewhat flexible.

Below are descriptions of each department. In order to be considered, please submit a resume and cover letter. FSR will assign each intern to a specific department, but all roles provide the opportunity to work across departments. In your application materials, please indicate at least 3 departmental preferences from the following:

 

BITS (FSR’s technology policy division)

This position is designed to solicit program support for various BITS departments and focus areas to include Fraud Reduction, Cybersecurity and other Special Interest Groups related to technology risk. The BITS internship experience will provide candidate with a greater awareness and understanding of the risk management field as it relates to financial services and public policy. Candidate will participate in the development, and facilitation of in-person meetings that host high-profile representatives of the financial services industry. Candidate will also participate in the development of core project initiatives and deliverables that may include whitepapers, advisories, surveys and the aggregation and analyzing of technology risk data.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Strong written, critical thinking, communication and organizational skills, portrays professionalism, a positive attitude and basic knowledge of external research tools, proves thorough and dependable and has a willingness to work with others.

Communications

This position is responsible with aiding FSR’s Communications department in its effort to sustain a strong digital media presence on multiple social media outlets as well as on its website. In addition, candidates will monitor FSR’s digital media performance through various digital analytics tools. Candidates will be instrumental in producing a wide variety of graphic design products, including agendas, brochures, reports, white papers, infographics and other visual media. Finally, candidates, will be assisting in any other tasks the Communications department needs, including, but not limited to, drafting press releases, participating in FSR off-site events, posting digital media content, distributing press releases and newsletters and conducting research for media appearances.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Currently majoring in communications, journalism, political communications or any related field is a strongly recommended, but not required. Knows design layout and/or school newspaper reporting experience is a plus but not necessary. Having knowledge of the following programs is a major plus, but not a requirement: VOCUS, Microsoft Publisher, InDesign, Aristotle, MailChimp, Google Analytics, TV Eyes, Twitter Counter.

Corporate Social Responsibility

FSR’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department promotes the positive impact FSR member companies make in their local communities, nationwide, and worldwide. By encouraging investments in social business opportunities and supporting the work of non-profit and other organizations, the CSR program has been able to promote over 80 signature financial literacy programs developed by FSR member companies. In this position, the candidate will gain first hand insight into corporate social responsibility initiatives of leading Financial Services companies. Responsibilities will include writing draft e-mails, feature stories, talking points and presentations for distribution to member companies and other national non-profits, researching financial literacy topics, corporate social responsibility programs, and legislative bills and write executive summaries and assisting with meetings and special events as well as attend outside meetings and/or receptions on behalf of the department. Some administrative tasks, such as updating and maintaining the contact database and input numerical data collected using excel to develop reports will also be required.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Currently majoring in Communications, Marketing, or Public Affairs with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better (based on 4.0 scale). Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, organized, ability to manage deadlines, set priorities, take initiative, work diplomatically and efficiently in fast-paced demanding environment, detail oriented, proficiency in Microsoft Office software and database management, and relate to all levels of personnel in collaborative manner.

Government Affairs

This position is responsible for assisting the Government Affairs department in its effort to foster and work towards achieving legislative goals and actions on behalf of our member companies. The candidate will work directly with the department lobbyists on special projects and coordinate Hill meetings, as well as provide research assistance in relevant financial services issues currently impacting the industry. Responsibilities will include monitoring Senate and House hearings and mark-ups relevant to financial services, as well as will attend hearings and prepare executive summaries immediately following. Candidate will assist the Government Affairs Manager in the coordination of and provide logistical support for FSR-Political Action Committee (PAC) fundraisers, meetings, and special events such as Financial Services University (FSU), the educational outreach program for Hill staffers and member companies. Additionally candidate will assist with various administrative tasks and provide assistance to other departments as needed.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Currently majoring in political science is ideal, but other fields of study such as government, public policy, economics, or business management is recommended. Previous experience interning in a congressional office or government official is desired, but not required. Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and proficient with MS Office applications to include Word and Excel, are essential.

HOPE NOW (a consumer housing alliance)

This position will assist in all operations of HOPE NOW. The candidate will be asked to identify and contact community partners in markets where HOPE NOW is hosting Homeownership Preservation Events, generate reports based on foreclosure and mortgage scam data collected at such events, prepare materials for events and other HOPE NOW meetings, manage clerical tasks, such as ordering office supplies and mailing letters to partners, assist with other foreclosure, housing, and banking research projects and cover Congressional hearings as needed. Candidate will receive a first-hand experience and learn about current issues affecting the housing market.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Candidate should be self-disciplined with a strong work ethic, quick-thinking, and possess critical problem solving skills. HOPE NOW requires an independent individual who is able to perform assigned research and project initiatives in a timely manner.

Housing Policy Council (FSR’s housing policy division)

This position will play an integral role for the HPC team. With a small department, the candidate will be leaned on heavily for a wide range of tasks including: assistance in preparing and planning for HPC Quarterly Meeting and monthly Advisory Council meetings, schedule appointments on Capitol Hill, attend congressional hearings, draft summaries on congressional hearings and proposed legislation and letters to Capitol Hill, attend Hill meetings with HPC staff, track legislation that is of interest to our members, and collect daily news articles for the team.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Ability to maintain confidentiality of various projects, correspondence and other written or oral items as needed. Knowledge and experience with political process and political persons is important. Excellent oral/written communication skills, adaptability to ever-changing environment, results/outcome oriented, strong time management, analytical, and critical thinking skills are a plus. Proficiency with MS Office applications (including: mail merges, creating calendar events, excel calculations and charts, constructing slide shows) and internet searching is required.

Meeting and Event Management

This position will assist the meetings department in managing logistics and operations of internal and external events. The candidate will manage the meetings calendar and ensure that internal meetings are scheduled appropriately in the conference spaces in the office. In addition, the candidate will assist with the preparation of said conference spaces prior to meetings occurring.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to interact cooperatively with multiple departments are required. Working knowledge of MS Office applications is needed.

Membership Services and Operations

FSR’s Membership and Operations department serves as the critical resource for all other FSR departments and our member companies. As a member-based organization, FSR relies on its member relations and operational efficiency to consistently achieve a high level of results. The successful candidate will gain first hand insight into building effective client relations as well as reaching peak operational capacity as an organization. FSR cannot fulfill its mission without the flawless work of the Membership and Operations team.
Responsibilities include maintaining the enterprise-wide database; producing detailed company briefings; creating participation reports for our CEO, senior executives, and staff; managing internal changes (i.e. technology service provider changes, etc.); and assisting operations for FSR annual meetings featuring CEOs and senior executives from America’s largest financial institutions. The successful candidate will have opportunities to interface with key leaders in the financial services realm.

Key Skill requirements/characteristics: Be self-directed in a fast-paced environment, highly detail oriented, an effective communicator (both verbal and written), and a fast learner. FSR senior staff relies on information provided by the Membership and Operations department so ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately is a must.
