BMO Capital Markets U.S. Diversity Scholarship - Summer 2024

  • There are 10 U.S. scholarships available; each in the amount of US$10,000 
  • Scholarship recipients receive an offer of paid employment for a 2024 10-week Summer Analyst intern position at BMO Capital Markets in New York or Chicago 
  • Recipients will be paired with a Capital Markets professional to provide coaching and mentorship throughout their internship 
  • Students receive formal and on-the-job training, opportunities to network and collaborate with other student interns, and access to ongoing professional development throughout their internship

What’s in it for you? 
  • Summer Analysts start the internship by completing a one-week training and orientation program 
  • During the next 10 weeks, in addition to on-the-job experience in your assigned business group, you will participate in professional development sessions and events throughout the summer

Eligibility criteria: 
  • You are a student at an accredited U.S. College/University, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s program with a graduation date of December 2024 or Spring 2025 
  • You identify as: Female, Visible minority, LGBTQ+, Persons with disabilities, Veteran 
  • You are available to work full-time from June-August 2024 
  • You have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 
  • You are involved in diverse extra-curricular activities and community organizations 
  • You are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident of U.S., or an individual who is legally authorized to work in the U.S. and will not require sponsorship in the future

Timeline and selection process 
We appreciate all student interest in our scholarships. The application review and selection process is highly competitive.  
  • Application deadline: January 23, 2023 
  • Applications will be reviewed by recruitment and business leaders across BMO Capital Markets 
  • Shortlisted candidates will be notified and invited to virtually interview beginning in early February 2023
  • Final round interviews will take place in mid to late February. Scholarship recipients will be notified and announced by May 2023 
  • Successful candidates will join the 2024 Summer Analyst Class

Investment Banking Overview:
The Summer Analyst program is designed for candidates between their junior and senior undergraduate years. The Program provides participants a practical experience in a dynamic capital markets environment. Summer analysts are assigned to a specific Investment Banking product or industry group during the 10-week program. In addition to this on-the-job experience, analysts will participate in a one-week training and orientation program. Throughout the summer, the program includes the opportunity to network with bankers across all levels as well as learn about the culture of BMO Capital Markets, participate in learning and development sessions, and obtain career guidance from dedicated mentors. The program is considered an initial interviewing step for the BMO Capital Markets full time Investment Banking program.
Responsibilities:
As an Investment Banking Summer Analyst at BMO Capital Markets, you will gain valuable exposure to a wide variety of industries and work with several financial products, including public and private debt and equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, and financial advisory. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Conducting industry and company research and analysis
  • Developing client presentations
  • Writing internal and external marketing memoranda
  • Running valuation analysis, financial analysis and completing complex modeling exercises
  • Performing other tasks supporting client relationships and business development

Qualifications:
BMO Capital Markets offers a practical, hands-on experience in a dynamic investment banking environment. We are looking for highly motivated, ambitious and mature individuals:
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, graduating in Dec. 2024 or Spring 2025
  • Interest in investment and corporate banking
  • A preferred minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Minimum of two college finance and accounting classes with grades “B” or higher
  • Outstanding academic achievement, leadership experience and peer recognition
  • Demonstrated leadership attributes in work, school or community
  • Excellent analytic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills used within a demanding team environment

Corporate Banking Overview:
The CB Summer Analyst program is designed for candidates between their second and third year of an undergraduate school. Summer analysts will gain valuable experience and exposure to a wide number of industries during the 10-week program. In addition to this on-the-job experience, the program includes the opportunity to network across various business groups, learn about the culture of BMO Capital Markets, participate in training and learning seminars, and obtain career guidance from dedicated mentors.
Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include:

  • Processing client requests (e.g. new credit facilities and extensions and/or amendments to existing credit facilities).
  • Completing annual / interim credit reviews. Credit reviews include industry and financial analysis comprising of: operating performance, cash flow, leverage, coverage and liquidity, as well as capital-at-risk and other regulatory capital calculations.
  • Monitoring performance of portfolio companies against credit terms and conditions and identify changes in the financial condition of a client.
  • Preparing presentation materials and relationship profitability assessments, which involve liaising with other product and industry groups within BMO Capital Markets. 
  • Performing other duties including industry and company-specific research, as well as ad hoc projects for senior professionals.
This position is ideally suited to talented, highly motivated individuals who seek to build a solid, comprehensive foundation in the basic skills of corporate banking. Opportunities are available in New York, Chicago and Houston.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate business/accounting/finance program graduating in Dec. 2024 or Spring 2025
  • GPA of 3.0/4/0
  • Strong interest in finance and banking.
  • Demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities.
  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills.

Global Markets Overview:
Program Overview:
Summer Analysts work in the Global Markets Group of BMO Capital Markets, comprising Client Coverage, Origination, Digital and Liquid Trading, Structured Products Trading, Equity Products, and Financial Resource Management. Global Markets serves institutional, corporate, and government clients.
A variety of desks host Summer Analysts including Equity Sales and Trading, Clearpool E-trading, Prime Finance, Structured Notes Sales and Trading, Leveraged Finance, Securitized Products Sales and Trading, Origination, Debt Capital Markets, and US Interest Rates Sales and Trading.
Summer interns will work on one desk in Global Markets over a 10-week period. Interns will be provided with desk job descriptions prior to starting and will be placed based on preference and skill set. Each intern will complete one week of onboarding and training with other interns across BMO Capital Markets. There are continuous professional development activities throughout the summer. These activities include teach-ins, trading games, meetings with senior leaders, and networking events with both peers and Senior Leadership.
Responsibilities:
Summer interns are fully integrated into an assigned desk. Responsibilities will vary widely from day to day based on the needs of the business and the current market environment. Depending on the assigned desk, intern skill set, and business needs, responsibilities may include:
  • Development and deployment of business solutions such as pricing and risk models
  • Market data capture and display, spreadsheet development
  • Providing insight into trading strategies leveraging quantitative modelling
  • Improving on existing technology involving system infrastructure, internal reporting, client/management presentations, etc.
  • Bespoke projects requiring market, portfolio, or client research and data analytics
  • Creating client presentation materials using PowerPoint and Excel
  • Developing client trade ideas
  • Planning client events
  • Recapping and organizing market data and events
  • Shadowing and learning from Trading, Sales, and Strategy professionals

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Additional Preferred Technical Qualifications:

  • Currently working towards a degree in: Finance, Engineering, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Statistics;
  • Knowledge and/or experience of front-end developer languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Angular);
  • Knowledge and/or experience in back end developer languages (C++, C#, Java, Python, VBA);
  • Knowledge and/or experience of at least one type of statistical programming language (i.e. R, MatLab);
  • Database experience (SQL, Oracle);
  • Familiarity with data manipulation and strong quantitative/statistical background;
  • Understanding of mathematical models;
  • Fluency in Excel, including scripting and efficient spreadsheet design;
  • Strong technical writing ability.
